Greetings!

Happy New Year! Yes, January is almost over, but I still have time to get my January 2009 Newsletter out before it becomes a February Newsletter.

Over the past year, I've been working hard trying to re-brand myself from being 'just a personal trainer' to being a Health Educator. The transformation is far from complete, but I know that 2009 is going to be huge for Total Health by Elizabeth.

Some of the things I've been working on are my mission statement & how I intend to be perceived by you. First, I always had the vision of working with my clients with the physical (personal training), diet (nutrition counseling), and emotional (wellness coaching) aspects of getting healthier. Additionally, my intent was to teach my clients how to get & maintain their health on their own. Not to have the same client for 3+ years.

What you can expect from me over the next year is:
  1. Have more FUN
  2. No more Whining; No more Excuses!
  3. More on how to be Healthier on your own
    (i.e.: without me)
My mission is to make the world a healthier place. I'm here to serve & help you lead a healthier life.

Have a Happy & Healthy 2009!

Sincerely,

Elizabeth Sherman

Get Organized to Succeed at Healthy Eating
from Diet Blog

Have you ever skipped breakfast because you were in a rush - and ending up grabbing a mid-morning candy bar to stave off hunger?

Have you ever wished that you had something healthy for lunch - when your canteen seems to specialize in greasy fried foods?

Have you ever phoned for a pizza just because there was nothing in the fridge?

Book Review: The Body Fat Solution by Tom Venuto
Body Fat Solutionfrom Skwigg Blog

I just finished reading Tom Venuto's new book, The Body Fat Solution. Tom is a fat loss genius but he's also a bodybuilder, so I was expecting this new book to contain bodybuilding things - math, macronutrient ratios, possibly "arm day." Instead he's written a detailed plan for ending emotional eating. I am in total awe!

While I admire Tom's programs like Burn The Fat, Feed The Muscle and his ability to get people really lean, I'll admit that I always felt a bit of a disconnect between these ultra-effective fat loss plans and my ability to actually carry them out. You can hand somebody the greatest diet in the history of nutrition spreadsheets, but if they're unwilling or unable to follow it, they still won't lose fat.

Tom writes:
"When I started in the fitness business, it never would have dawned on me that a program could be too effective or too sophisticated. Truth be told, I was always looking for advanced diet tricks or some extra competitive edge to shed that final ounce of fat. In hindsight, I now see that the programs I prescribed may have been the most effective in the world, but they were like shooting a squirrel with cannon! It's nice to have all of that firepower, but it's overkill for the job."

My Pet Peeve
Okay - so I really don't have just one pet peeve; I have many - but this one has to be pretty much at the top. It drive me NUTS when folks go to school, work, gym, etc when they're sick. There's a new Human Resource term for it: presenteeism. Presenteeism is defined as when employees are at work physically, but not mentally.

What are your expectations for yourself?
Yesterday I was reading this blog about photo retouching. It started me thinking about how much magazines and how they influence our expectations of our own bodies.

I am a magazine junkie. I love reading short articles about whatever. When I travel, People Magazine is my guilty pleasure of choice. I wonder though, how the images that I see in the magazine influence the way that I see my own body, and how I feel about it.
